Traditional Irish Moss Cough Syrup Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 10g-28g Dried Irish Moss
  • 500ml - 700ml Filtered Water
  • 1 Lemon (juice and rind/zest)
  • 1-2 tbsp Honey (to taste)
  • 1 Knob Fresh Ginger, sliced (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Clean: Rinse the dried Irish moss thoroughly in cold water to remove any salt, sand, or grit.
  2. Soak: Soak the moss in cold water for 15-20 minutes to soften.
  3. Simmer: Place the seaweed and soaking water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer gently for 15–30 minutes until the seaweed dissolves and the liquid becomes thick and viscous.
  4. Flavor: Add the ginger and lemon rind during the last 10 minutes of simmering.
  5. Strain: Strain the mixture through a sieve into a glass jar or bottle. Use the back of a spoon to press as much liquid (which will be gelatinous) through the sieve as possible.
  6. Sweeten & Store: Stir in the honey and lemon juice once slightly cooled. Seal in a jar and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.age
Take 1–2 tablespoons of the syrup as needed to soothe a cough or sore throat.
Notes
The mixture will thicken into a jelly-like consistency when cold; it can be taken off the spoon, mixed into hot water as a tea, or warmed gently.
  • It is rich in iodine, sulfur, and nutrients, making it effective for shifting phlegm.
