Junniper berries are technically a modified a seed cone and considered a herb not a fruit. If you are wondering about the familiarity in taste when you try this tea, it is known for the piney flavor in gin and remedies for digestion/urinary issues.

7-day treatment:

Day1: Take 3 crushed berries using a teaspoon, covered and steeped in hot water for 10 minutes, drink, mull berries in mouth , chew and swallow. Stay hydrated (you should drink water but ensure you do not end up going to the bathroom more than once and hour, if this is the case lower your water intake as you are over working your kidney at this stage).

Day 2-7 increase berries by 1 a day, (day 2 will be 4 berries and so on).

Stop after day 7. Take a one month break if you feel you want to continue with a kidney cleanse as part of keeping your systems balanced. The more processed food you consume, the more you will require a regular cleanse. In this day and age, it is difficult to avoid toxins, but we can certainly reduce these to reduce having to cleanse as often.

The ripe berries can be used entirely safely however; we must maintain a healthy respect for the potency of these tiny berries to activate an increased kidney function and to recognise that this is not something that one should do overlong or over-strong. Nor would I suggest it to be a herb to use for young children or during pregnancy.

Lastly, in terms of safety, the right dose is simply essential. Dosage is vital to successful, and safe, herbal medicine. Too little will miss the potential benefit, too much will unduly stress the system (in this case the kidneys).

For anyone new to using Juniper, it is advised to start with Juniper at a very moderate level (hence the 7 day treatment), build up the dose gradually, and not to use it for too long.
